Akebia trifoliata

A vigorous semi-evergreen climber from China and Japan, capable of climbing 9m into a tree, or just covering an average garden wall or fence. Dark-purple/maroon flowers are seen in drooping racemes in April, followed by sausage shaped pale-violet fruits, often in groups of three, after a warm summer. The mucilaginous flesh surrounding the seed is sweet and delicious. The leaves are composed of three leaflets, each shallowly lobed. An easy to please hardy climber for sun or semi-shade.
