Acer macrophyllum

The 'Bigleaf or Oregon Maple' from Western USA is truly one of the noblest of maples and makes a large tree with huge, deeply and strikingly lobed foliage, often up to 30cm long and wide, and large drooping clusters of scented yellow flowers in spring. The big bristly seeds combine with rich orange autumn colour. Hardy, fast growing and easy, this very quickly makes an upright, rounded crown. The sap can be used as an alternative to Sugar maple for maple syrup, with a distinct flavour, and interest in Bigleaf Maple syrup is increasing.
