Aralia spinosa

Know as the Hercules' Club or Devil's Walking Stick in its home of SE North America, this large shrub, has splendidly spiny upright stems and rather magnificent and very large, highly divided, bi-pinnate foliage, composed of very many small leaflets. Large heads of greenish-white flowers above the foliage in July, making it one of the first Aralia species to flower in UK gardens. The flowers are followed by a multitude of small black berries in autumn. Introduced to the UK in 1688 and well proven in gardens. For sun or semi-shade.
