Arbutus andrachne

This, the true species, is very rarely available for sale. Not to be confused with the hybrid A. x andrachnoides, this is one of the parents, found in the Eastern Mediterranean in Greece, Turkey and beyond and often found growing on dry limestone as well as acidic soils. A beautiful species with peeling cinnamon red-brown bark in summer, exposing sandy coloured new bark as it does. Clusters of small white flowers in spring are followed by edible red fruit. For a sunny well drained site, this is a little hardier than A. unedo and very drought tolerant.

Pot size: 2L
