Azara microphylla ‘Variegata’

A particularly elegant, hardy, evergreen, upright large shrub or small tree with small, but strongly and deliciously vanilla scented yellow flowers lining the branches in early spring. The tiny leaves are highly variegated cream and green reminding one of the foliage of Cotoneaster horizontalis 'Variegatus'. Probably best with a little shelter, though this is the toughest species of the genus and survives the coldest winters in most areas. For sun or semi-shade, this grows very vigorously in youth. I like very few variegated plants, but this is a very pretty exception.
