Bletilla striata

A hardy garden orchid from Asia with vibrant, rich purple-pink, comparatively large flowers, up to 12 per stem, above handsome pleated foliage in early summer. Height 30-40cm. Shade often recommended but very happy in full sun if not dry in summer, so in many places best in half shade. Builds by rhizomes to form a good clump in any reasonably humus-rich soil, but is better pot grown if you are particularly susceptible to late spring frost. If so, overwinter under cover.
