Carpinus caroliniana ‘Red Fall’

The American Hornbeam from the lowland forests of Eastern N America forms a smaller tree than our native, but still reaches to about 12m in time and in this selected form offers bright red autumn colour. A tough species for most soils in sun or semi-shade, this is used to more heat in its natural habitat, though responds very happily to cooler conditions also. Like our native it develops fascinating and distinctive fluted trunks with smooth grey bark. Very shade tolerant, but for for best autumn colour grow in full sun.
