Rarely planted in the UK, this is perfectly growable here, completely hardy and has reached 18m high at Exbury, with others elsewhere in the UK and NW Europe. It is highly tolerant of waterlogged conditions in heavy soil, but also happy baked dry in summer, so together with great heat tolerance it is clearly a tree for the future in the UK's changing climate. Closely related to the Pecan, C. illinoinensis, the pinnate foliage bears usually narrower, more elegant leaflets, which turn to shades of yellow in autumn.
