Carya cordiformis

The Bitternut from the Eastern USA is the best hickory for growing in the UK, forming a strong, noble, upright tree to about 30m at full maturity. The pinnate foliage is composed of much finer, slimmer, smaller leaflets than most species and turns to rich butter-yellow shades in autumn. The winter buds are golden-yellow. Suited to any reasonable soil, this fully hardy, easily grown tree should be far more widely planted.
