Carya glabra

The Pignut from E North America makes a fine specimen here in the UK with leaden-grey, smooth bark with shallow fissures and pinnate leaves, turning to a truly splendid deep, rich, warm yellow in autumn. As with most Hickories, it makes a medium sized to large tree eventually and is tolerant of most soils. Seldom seen in the UK, even in arboreta, but very hardy and easily growable on virtually all soil types. Like nearly all hickories, this is a tap rooted species which is best planted as small as possible.
