Cleyera pachyphylla

Virtually unknown in cultivation here, this Chinese species is proving hardy given reasonable shelter. An evergreen large shrub or even small tree over time with thickly leathery and comparatively large foliage, far more substantial than the better known but still unusual C. japonica. Small white scented flowers are like miniature Camellias. Has the appearance of an evergreen Magnolia. For a reasonably sheltered site in most reasonable soils
