Colletia hystrix
A most distinctive genus of shrubs from South America, related to Rhamnus but with a unique look in gardens here. This species from Chile and Argentina makes a medium sized almost leafless shrub with an extremely green-spiny form. In late summer and autumn a mass of small white fragrant flowers crowd the branches. Perfectly hardy, this is suited to most soils in sun.
