A hybrid between the American species C. florida and C. nuttallii, making a hardy large shrub or small, compact tree, with layers of branches smothered in large white flower heads in May. Leaves give brilliant autumn colour. Quite a sight in flower, closely resembling a good C. nuttallii. Normally considered a plant for neutral to acid soil, this grows perfectly on thin alkaline Cotswold soil near here, though avoid thin chalk.
