Corylus ferox var. tibetica

A very distinctive and rarely seen hazelnut from China, with this collection originally found in Sichuan. A large multistemmed shrub or small tree with deeply parallel veined foliage, pale-grey downy on the underside, and pretty pink male catkins in spring. The latter are followed by the piece de la resistance; the extremely spiny hedgehog like fruit clusters in autumn.
