Cynara baetica subsp. maroccana

A very low growing but spectacular wild cardoon relative from Central and Northern Morocco, found between 900 and 2100m altitude, where it inhabits sunny locations in well drained soils, reaching just 50 to 90cm tall, with silver-green, very deeply divided spiny foliage. The spectacular flower heads are borne on branched stems in summer and are composed of artichoke-like globes beset with purple-pink spine tipped involucral bracts, which contrast with the central boss of lilac tubular florets.
