Dryopteris atrata (cycadina in hort.)

A tough and good looking Asian species for UK gardens; the fronds unfurl showing black scales and reach 60cm high, arching out slightly. The rich green frond has a simple elegance, being pinnate with slim pinnae, and reminding one of a cycad, hence the confusion in UK horticulture with that closely related species. Very hardy and easy in semi shade.
