Elatostema umbellatum ‘Dents de Kyoto’ PB 04-1002

Akamizu or Red Mizu is a ground covering forest floor Japanese endemic from the nettle family (Urticaceae), though completely non-stinging and making an attractive and unusual foliage plant for shade. Reaching only 30cm tall, the foliage is deeply serrated showing prominent teeth (hence the French moniker) and is held on arching stems which also bear small umbels of white flower in spring. The foliage is eaten as a foraged wild vegetable in Japan. For a shady moist position.
