An excellent vigorous evergreen groundcover with bright yellow flowers in early spring and fairly glossy foliage. As temperatures cool in autumn the leaves turn either deep purple-black or maroon, depending on light exposure, though a 'thunderbolt' of green remains along the veins. Very tough and drought tolerant in most soils. Height 40cm. Semi to full shade, though actually fairly tolerant of full sun also in my experience. Collected in the former Soviet Georgia in 1973 by Skip March of the U.S. National Arboretum.
