Hedera colchica ‘Batumi’

An arresting ivy from the Caspian and Black Sea regions with huge, broad, very dark-green foliage, different and to my eye far more appealing than other large leaved species like H. canariensis. I've seen large old specimens of this growing wild in Georgia on cliffs and trees and the foliage effect is quite magnificent. I've also grown this Roy Lancaster collected clone in the Cotswolds for thirty odd years where it has clothed a wall in a gloomy corner and, considering the darkness of the leaves, has surprisingly elevated the area, no doubt due to their sheen.
