One of the finest of the dark leaved H. aspera, bred by Maurice Foster in Kent, and selected for its richly coloured foliage which emerges suffused purple; as it greens above the undersurface remains a handsome maroon-red. Large lacecap flower heads have a bluish-purple fertile centre, surrounded by soft pink, slightly cupped outer florets, seen in late summer. A large deciduous shrub, best in semi-shade and not excessively dry.
