Illicium majus

Native to mountainous regions of Myanmar, SW China and Vietnam, up to 2500m alt., this is a medium to large tree in the wild, but expect a shrub here in the UK. Glossy, fairly large, evergreen leathery foliage and slightly pink-flushed creamy-primrose flowers, scented of lemony-elderflower in spring/summer, followed by Star Anise-like (inedible) fruit clusters. For a reasonably sheltered position.

Pot size: 2L
