Illicium parviflorum

The Ocala Anise is a hardy species from the South East USA and widely used as a landscape plant there, known for its ease of growth and deer resistant qualities. This forms a small to medium sized slow growing evergreen shrub here with small yellow flowers produced in late summer and blunt tipped foliage, aromatic when crushed. For sun or semi-shade, this enjoys reasonably even moisture in the growing season and although lime tolerant, it is not suited to thin, highly alkaline soils. Rarely offered and barely known in the UK, this is a hardy relative of the Star Anise.
