Impatiens tinctoria

A huge species from the mountains of E. Africa. Fleshy stems reach about 1.8m high and form a big clump, best suited to semi-shade or moist soil in full-sun. Beautiful, large, orchid-like, long spurred, red-blotched white flowers produced in summer, filling the evening air with a sweet fragrance. Deep mulch in winter please, but remarkably hardy. Less Busy Lizzie, more Elizabeth Regina.
