Juglans sigillata

A particularly rare species of walnut relatively recently introduced to UK cultivation from the Himalaya and China, where it grows up to 25m high and bears bold pinnate leaves up to 50cm long with a maximum of 15 leaflets. Known as the 'Iron walnut' in China where it is cultivated for nut production, the nut husks are relatively small and deeply pitted. This has grown very strongly here in Gloucestershire, averaging about 1m a year. Probably better grown on for a year or so and planted larger, as despite being genetically hardy, it is soft when young under UK conditions.
