Magnolia ‘Caerhays Surprise’

A hybrid of M. campbellii subsp. mollicomata and M. liliiflora 'Nigra', this makes a small tree with flowers about 20-25cm across, composed of 9-12 narrow tepals, soft lilac-pink with deeper red-purple undersides. They are seen on the bare branches over a long season, from the end of March until May. A fine hybrid, raised at Caerhays Castle in 1960.
