Magnolia macrophylla

One of the most magnificent of hardy flowering trees, not only for its vast, fragrant, purple-marked parchment white flowers in summer, opening up to 45cm wide, but also for its gargantuan foliage. Each leaf, with a silver-white underside, is up to 60cm long in the UK, though even bigger at home in the S.E. USA. Shelter from wind, good soil, and a warm spot suit this hardy tree well, though I know of a very fine specimen in woodland conditions on the cool Cumbrian coast. A small to medium sized tree in the UK.

Pot size: 2L
