Magnolia ‘Eileen Baines’

A hybrid of M. wilsonii and the very similar M. sinensis, this semi-double flowered form was selected in Scotland and registered in only 2015. A large deciduous shrub bearing pendulous, scented, saucer-shaped white flowers in May and June, each with a boss of crimson stamen at the centre. Best with semi-shade in the south, this is one of the best Magnolias for thin chalk soils though is of course even happier on richer, deeper soil.
