Mahonia acanthifolia

Often confused with the very different M. napaulensis in cultivation, the real deal is one of the very finest of all Mahonia, with highly impressive foliage up to 75cm long on a very large shrub to at least 5m in cultivation, though much taller in the Himalaya. Fragrant deep yellow flowers in terminal racemes to 25cm long in autumn. Generally hardy with shelter, but can be damaged in exceptional cold events in very cold locations.
