Melianthus major

A stunning South African foliage plant with huge grey-blue serrated foliage like nothing else. Usually treated as herbaceous, but can be an evergreen woody shrub in mild areas. Plant in a sunny spot in early summer to get a well established plant and then mulch for winter, though I don't bother mulching and have no problems over twenty years, even down to -14c! Makes a plant 1.5 x 1.5m in one season. Usually red flowers in spring or sometimes autumn.
