The Contorted Mulberry makes a small to medium sized hardy tree with splendidly twisted stems and large unlobed foliage, but unlike the Contorted Hazel, the leaves are not misshapen. Tasty sweet fruit start red and turn black as they ripen in a hot summer. Suited to any reasonable soil and although very heat tolerant, the species is happy in N. England at least and will no doubt just make a smaller tree in Scotland. This is known in Europe as M. latifolia 'Spirata'.
