There can be few things more beautiful than this (no, really) when the new foliage emerges in spring. A Far Eastern member of the laurel family, making a medium to large evergreen shrub with oval foliage expanding in spring covered in silken, golden, shining hairs, turning coppery before green, when the glaucous underside becomes apparent. Soft yellow flowers in summer. Generally hardy, this requires a sheltered position in most areas. This survived with little damage the extreme cold of 2009-10 at the Sir Harold Hillier gardens, for example.
