Parrotiopsis jacquemontiana

A rare member of the Witch Hazel family from the Western Himalaya, making a large hardy deciduous shrub. Grown primarily for the rather Cornus-like flower heads, seen in April and May as the leaves expand and later through the summer; composed of showy white bracts surrounding a boss of yellow stamen. Not for thin chalk soils, but otherwise fine on lime.
