Pinus engelmannii

One of the most incredible foliage trees we are able to grow in the UK, this is very, very rarely obtainable. Perfectly hardy, this comes from Arizona and Mexico, where I've seen it making medium-sized sparsely branched trees with extremely long foliage on very stout shoots. The super-long (35cm) needles make for beachball sized heads at the ends of the branches. Quite fabulous. This has grown happily at the Hillier arboretum for decades. Most probably perfectly happy on alkaline as well as acid soils, with one customer even reporting success on sodden heavy clay! For sun.
