Platanus orientalis

'Oriental Plane'. Long lived, highly ornamental and far more characterful than London Plane, with deeply lobed leaves, wide spreading sinuous branches and excellent patchwork flaking bark. Clear yellow autumn colour comes late, at the end of autumn. A must for any large garden or parkland, this reaches potentially 20 to 30m tall, with a broad crown spread. Tolerant of a wide range of soils and soil moisture plus heat; something to consider with climate change kicking in. The Tree of Hippocrates, under which he once taught on the island of Kos, is a Platanus orientalis.
