Podocarpus totara

A truly mighty conifer in its native New Zealand, this makes a fine specimen in the Far South West of England at least, where the largest old specimen in the UK is known to be 19m tall with a substantial trunk. Further East it is much smaller, often a large shrub, and survives considerable cold if well sheltered. Stiff, leathery, sharply pointed evergreen foliage in two ranks or scattered on the shoot. For most soil types, acid or alkaline. Very rarely offered for sale.
