Quercus crassifolia

A most striking hardy, evergreen Mexican oak, suitable for large swathes of the UK and highly suited to the hotter drier summers coming your way soon. Fairly big, very dark green, shallowly lobed, very leathery evergreen leaves with a pale yellow-beige hairy underside emerge covered in a dense bright-red hairy fuzz. Makes a medium sized tree in the UK and has been fully hardy here in Gloucestershire, even through the desperate winters of 2009-10 at -14c, with three week freezes. For acid or alkaline soils, heavy or light. The UK champion has grown at Kew since the 1930's.
