Quercus ellipsoidalis

The Northern Pin oak from North Central USA and Southern Canada makes for an extremely hardy species, mainly grown here for its superb crimson-purple autumn colour. A medium to large sized fast growing tree with a rounded crown on a short trunk and particularly handsome very deeply lobed leaves on slender petioles. An old favourite of mine, this is mainly found on dry sandy soils in nature, but here it thrives in a wide range of soils, though thin chalk is a step too far.
