Quercus falcata

The Southern Red Oak from the Eastern, Southern and Central USA forms a vigorous large tree up to 24m maximum, with long stalked glossy green foliage to 20cm long, tawny hairy beneath. Foliage varies enormously, but on an individual specimen early season leaves are often 3 to 5 lobed, the lobes long and slim and those on the second flush with up to 10 lobes. Highly suited to poor soils (though not thin chalk), but grows faster and bigger in good deep ordinary to good soils. Very heat tolerant.
