Quercus ilex ‘Fordii’

An old but rarely offered distinct and attractive selection of the Holm oak from Exeter, with the leaves only 2.5–6 cm long × 1–1.6 cm wide, very dark glossy green above, with an undulate and irregularly toothed margin, giving a far more elegant effect than is typical. The dense conical upright habit in youth fills out over time to make a shorter than usual, bushy, rounded crown to usually about 10m and a maximum of 15m. Utterly suited to heat and drought, this Mediterranean species copes admirably with poor, thin, dry soils, but relishes rich, deep moist soils too.
