Quercus ilex ‘Matteinii’

A relatively recently selected form of the Holm oak from Italy, where it was picked out from many seedlings for having larger and thicker leaves than usual and a more compact habit. It is believed to also benefit from greater foliar disease resistance. Ultimately a large evergreen tree, perfectly suited to hot dry summers, with a spectacular flowering display in early summer when the crown is completely draped with yellow catkins as the old leaves fall.
