Bearing the largest acorns of any oak in the world, being up to 12cm wide(!), this is a real rarity and one of the most distinct and desirable of all oak species, though sadly only suited to outdoor cultivation in the very mildest parts of the UK. From Central America, North into Mexico and threatened in its natural habitat by forest clearance for coffee cultivation, this noble oak bears elongated foliage to 28cm long that emerges covered in dark red hairs, becoming green later. This would do well as a conservatory specimen, pruned back each year and grown as a shrub.
