Related to both Q. rubra and Q. coccinea, the 'Swamp red oak' from Central and Southern USA forms a medium to large sized hardy tree in the southern UK, though one can expect perhaps small to medium further north, depending how cool your summers are. The bold foliage is very attractive, deeply lobed and glossy-green, turning to autumn colours of spectacular red or golden-brown. Not suited to shallow alkaline soils but any other ordinary soil is fine, including heavy clays, and there is no need for a swamp.
