From Fan Si Pan, N. Vietnam at 2900m asl, where it grew as a 7m high small tree. Introduced to the UK in only 1992, this has proven completely hardy, even in Scotland. Large leathery obovate foliage to 32cm long is beige underneath and the large trusses of bell-shaped flowers are pale-yellow, seen in April/May. Semi-shade and shelter from strong winds, or full sun in moist climate.
