Once thought to be a true species, but shown to be a naturally-occurring hybrid between the Mediterranean natives Ruscus hypoglossum and Ruscus hypophyllum. Very drought and heat tolerant, this slowly makes an excellent dense ground covering clump of evergreen foliage on stems 60 to 80cm tall. The 'leaves' are in fact cladodes (modified stems) and bear tiny white and purple female flowers in their centres in spring, followed by red fruit if pollinated by a male of another species. Very tough, coping admirably with dry shade. Rarely offered and slow to increase.
