From high altitude in N Vietnam, this has proven to be one of the hardier species of this highly exotic looking genus, forming a tall evergreen shrub or small tree to perhaps 5m. The handsome compound-palmate foliage is composed of up to 11 leaflets per leaf, with some of them being much smaller and held above the others in a separate rank, held on purple petioles. White flowers are borne in autumn, followed by black berries. Suited to a sheltered position, away from screaming NE winds and frost pockets in reasonably drained soil.
