Sophora longicarinata

With up to 52 miniscule, rounded, well-spaced leaflets per leaf, this rare endemic from the Far North of South Island, New Zealand is a foliage plant par excellence. Forming an evergreen shrub or small tree, often as wide as high, this can also sprout or sucker at the base, being potentially mildly rhizomatous; a useful trait considering it is not the hardiest species. Golden-yellow atypical pea flowers are seen en-masse in spring. Sun and shelter.
