Styrax formosanus var. formosanus

A perfectly hardy species from the mountains of Taiwan, closely related to S. japonicus, with the pendant, white, bell-like flowers markedly and distinctly scented; similar to but not quite as divine as Jasminum polyanthum. Only introduced in the early 1990's it has made an upright small tree, less wide spreading than typical Japanese S. japonicus. Expect at least 6m tall; best in woodland or equally semi-sheltered conditions on lime free soil.
