Torreya californica

Rarely obtainable, this drought tolerant Caifornian endemic conifer makes a small to medium sized tree which could be likened to a rather noble looking Yew, with longer spine tipped foliage. Male and female flowers are borne on separate specimens, but if you plant a group you can expect to see the relatively large, olive-like fruit in autumn. Completely hardy in the UK, this is a good choice for a dry summer future.
