Tropaeolum ciliatum
This vigorous and very easily grown species from Chile was introduced by that great plantsman Harry Hay, and has proven hardy in his Surrey garden. Totally herbaceous, it will cover a 3m fence or wall in one season and produce an abundance of ochre-yellow flowers in summer. Best in moist but well drained soil in semi-shade. Mulch over in winter.
