Ulmus laevis

One of the most disease resistant elms, due to its bark being highly distasteful to Elm bark beetles, and virtually never infected in Western Europe. It makes fine specimens across Europe and the UK and enjoys a moist or even wet soil, tolerating seasonal complete inundation with ease, though normal soils are fine too. A large vigorous tree, very rarely seen in the UK, but an important host for the White Letter Hairstreak butterfly. Trunks develop handsome basal buttressing, even without moist/wet soil. Finally, land owners are waking up to the importance of this species.
